The Two Thieves

Luke 23: 32-43

Here is a criminal who sees Jesus as both God and King. But there are so many people with tremendous education or religious activity who can’t see God.

Discussion: How do you see God?

All religions do not lead to God. The only way we can be reconciled to God is by the death of His Son on the cross. Jesus was crucified between 2 criminals. He did not have to endure such abuse.

No man takes it from me, but I lay it down myself. I have the power to lay it down and the power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.                    John 10: 18

Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.                                                                                                                              Hebrews 12: 2

Discussion: Discuss the joy that was set before Him?

The Experience of the Two Thieves on the Cross Struck a Death Blow to Some False Teaching.

  • Water Baptism

False Teaching: When you are baptized you are saved and water baptism is essential to salvation. The Truth: Waters Baptism does not save you. However, it is a public confession to your new life in Christ Jesus. The criminal was not baptized.

  • Good Works

False Teaching: Salvation is achieved by doing good works. The Truth: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.                                                                    Ephesians 2: 8-9

Discussion: Do you ever think you have to do something to earn your salvation?

  • Universalism

False Teaching: All will eventually be saved. The Truth: Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born [again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”                                                                                                       John 3: 3

  • Soul Sleep

False Teaching: Spirit, soul and body stays in grave until one general resurrection.

The Truth: Absent from the body and present with the Lord.                  2 Corinthians 5: 8

It is the body that goes to the grave until resurrection.

For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with trumpet of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so we shall we ever be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

  • Purgatory: The Bible does not speak of a place called purgatory. There is no halfway house.
  • Death is not the end.

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.

John 11: 25-26

Discussion: When did the meaning of the death of Jesus begin to make sense to you?
