Don’t Freak Out

Psalm 37

Psalm 37 is the interpretation of the 3rd beatitude in Matthew 5.

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.                                     Matthew 5: 5

Biblical definition: Meekness: An attitude of HUMBLE, SUBMISSIVE, and EXPECTANT TRUST in God, and a loving, patient and gentle attitude towards others.

Meekness is not weakness it is STRENGTH under CONTROL.

Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.

Proverbs 16:32

  1. MEEKNESS arrives when we aren’t MADDENED by the EVIL in the world.

Psalm 37:1, Psalm 37: 7, Psalm 37: 8, Psalm 37: 10, Psalm 37: 13, Psalm 37: 17

David basically says the meek get through difficulties by not fretting and not being envious. Fret means enflamed with heat. Don’t be enflamed with heat. He tells us to keep our cool by realizing the wicked will not prevail.

Discussion:  When do you find yourself fretting over what others do or get away with?

  • MEEKNESS arrives when we ACTIVELY TRUST in God.

Psalm 37: 3, Romans 12:21

Trusting in the Lord should always lead to action. Don’t complain, contribute…despite negative circumstances. God was good to us when we did not deserve it. He loved us and died for us when we were sinners. We need to have compassion and forgiveness. Freely, He gave. As Christians, we must freely give.

Discussion: How can you have compassion on someone who makes you angry right now?

Discussion: How does this inspire you into Action, to Contribute good instead of complaining about the evil taking place around you?

  • MEEKNESS arrives when we REST in God.

Psalm 37: 7, Matthew 11: 28-29

Man’s problem is that we don’t sit quietly. God wants us to take a break and rest in Him. He commanded Sabbath days and years.

Discussion: What specifically do you need to turn off in order to rest in Him?

  • MEEKNESS arrives when we ENJOY God.

Psalm 37:4, Psalm 34:

We were made to enjoy God.

Discussion: How do you enjoy God?

  • MEEKNESS arrives when we GIVE our PLANS and DREAMS to God.

Psalm 37: 5

Commit means to roll on to.  Roll all your plans on to God.

We Plan but God Moves.

Discussion: What plans and dreams do you find it difficult to surrender right now?

Meekness is not WEAKNESS, it is a life RESTING in the PEACE God gives, ACTIVE in the GOOD God wants, and SURRENDERED to the PURPOSES God reveals.

Discussion: When did the meaning of the death of Jesus begin to make sense to you?
